Pixar your car!

I made a tutorial a couple of years ago for a IST/Graphics. Students took a picture of their own car and then ‘Pixarfied’ them turning them into something from the animated kids flick Cars. I haven’t used it for a few years, however, as I clean through old hard drives and organise work I came across the handout. I’ve made a couple of modifications and the grid at the end was an early attempt at ‘gamification’ which never stuck. Students feel free to use it and Photoshop (it’s on your laptops!) for fun or practice. Teachers feel free to download it and use it with your classes.

Skill, Dedication… Priceless

Fine woodworker’s article on Micro Maestro William R. Robertson’s 1/12 scale tool set is just mind-boggling what someone with enough dedication and skill can achieve. So much so that I will just have to decorate my workshop wall with it.

Design – Cup Noodles story in Manga

I bought a Manga comic years ago off the sale table at Impact Comics in the ACT not knowing exactly what it was, but while reading it I realised that it may be the perfect Design resource for some students. Unfortunately at the time nobody seemed very interested in my find or my love of graphic novels. I did get a program for boys literacy and engaging reluctant readers going at my previous school, and had a class set of this book. Project X Cup Noodles was one of three Manga novels in a series on Japanese innovation, the others being 7-11 stores and Nissan. Unfortunately it looks as though it’s no longer in print, sad. It had some wonderful timelines and charts in the back which showed the development of ideas and directly related them to events of the era. If you can find it I highly recommend it to anyone interested in design.

A good reason for a teacher to have a smartphone

I’ve been using Android for Academics Attendance app for Android for a few years now and I just wanted to share this free little gem with you. I can’t say that I could find an IOS attendance app that was as simple and straightforward.

Great new book for the thrifty woodwork teacher

Just got a copy of the new Taunton woodworking book One-Board Woodworking Projects. 20 projects each made from a single board of timber. This may give some great new ideas to base some teaching programs on. Nice way to work to a tight budget.

Show & Tell – Oddjob

Very exited to receive my new toy! a recreation of the famous Stanley OddJob. I’ve always wanted one of these so stay tuned for more exciting news as to all the ways we find to use it in class. Old timers used to say ‘All you needed was a #1 Odd Job, a hammer, and a saw, and you could build anything.’  Made by Stanley from 1888 to the early 1930′s

Beautiful isn't it...
